A Message from the Club President

The Rotary Club of Sequim was chartered in June 11, 1930 and earlier this year we celebrated our 80th anniversary.  It is an honor and a privilege to be a Rotarian and I appreciate the opportunity to lead our club for the 2010-2011 Rotary year.  This year the Rotary International Theme is “Building Communities, Bridging Continents”.

When we review the 80 year history of our vibrant club, we find that we have been fulfilling this ideal for decades.  We have been coordinating the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade for the past 51 years.  We have hosted our annual Salmon Bake for 41 years.  Our Harry Hughes Memorial Dictionary Project was launched in 2000 and over the years has provided thousands of 4th graders in our school district with their very own dictionary each year.

In addition to our community service projects we enjoy participating in the annual Duck Derby to raise funds for our community.  With the money raised, we make regular donations to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Scouting, the Sequim Food Bank, the Sequim-Dungeness Wellness Clinic and a number of other local charities.  A particular favorite with club members is the support we provide to the students of Sequim High School through our Student of the Month recognition program and our annual contributions to scholarships for graduating seniors.

Our commitment to the primary motto of Rotary “Service Above Self” is not restricted to our local community.  In recent years we have made significant progress in promoting our International Service efforts by partnering with other Rotary Clubs.  This past year we completed a clean water project for a school of 400 students in Olongapo City, Philippines.  We continue to assist disaster victims overseas through our contributions to Shelterbox.   We are committed to the ongoing effort to the eradication of polio throughout the world.

I look forward to the upcoming year as we continue to work together accomplishing projects to benefit not just our own community, but communities across the world.

Yours in Rotary,

Sara
